“Speak Up- Speak RIGHT” was a public speaking training initiative project organized and facilitated by the Rotaract club of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo on 25th February 2019 at the main hall of the faculty. The purposes of the project were Improve public speaking among medical students, Training students to become facilitators and mentors, Improving viva and impromptu speaking skills and Creating a platform for future programs.
The project was chaired by Rtr. Raveen Lekamwasam. The program had 60 registered participants and 9 facilitators, who was chosen from the students. The facilitators were Rtr. Deedat Safeer, Rtr. Yasara Wickramasinghe, Rtr. Hiruni Fernando, Rtr. Akhila Nilaweera, Rtr. Saduni, Rtr. Minura Manchanayake, Rtr. Hasindu Arumapperuma, Rtr. Chathumi Dasanayaka, Rtr. Dileesha Wikaramasinghe, Rtr. Suduni Wijerathne. These facilitators were given a special training session before the event.
After the initial discussion with the project committee, we planned to conduct a program for only members of Rotaractors of Rotaract Club of University of Colombo Faculty of Medicine and undergraduates of University of Colombo Faculty of Medicine around 50-60 participants. The facilitators had a separate training session on the 16th of February. Necessary educational material was printed beforehand. It was decided to divide the participants into small groups with two facilitators each. A Google form was used to register participants.
A public relations plan was conducted 10 days prior to the event. Five Facebook posts were posted leading up to the event giving information on the program, Keynote Speaker, Objectives of the program and Registration.
TM Chathushika Wijeyesingha from Colombo Toastmasters club participated in the program keynote as a prominent Toastmaster with a career.
