HISTORY

The Rotaract Club of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo is the product of months of commitment and vehement struggles of a bunch of students working with passion with dreams of becoming leaders in creating lasting changes in our community and the world as a whole.

First stone for establishing the club was laid after approaching the District Rotaract Representative in February 2018 and the club came under the sponsorship of Rotary Club of Colombo North on 4th September, 2018. The President of the Club was symbolically invested with the President’s collar and the Gavel by the Governor at the Rotary Club of Colombo North Governor’s Visit on 4th of December, 2018. The Rotaract Club of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo was chartered on 31st of December, 2018. The Charter Installation Ceremony of the Charter President Rtr. Tushani Ranawaka and her board of Directors was held on 1st of March, 2019. Since then the Rotaract club of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo has been a proud member of Rotaract Distrct 3220. At the time of the charter installation ceremony, the club comprised of members, whereas at the end of Rotaract year, it has expanded with members. During the Charter year of the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, twenty-two projects were successfully executed including two district projects, whereas seven projects were carried out before the charter installation. We managed to win the Bronze award for the Best PR project of the district, ‘You Are Not Alone”.

The second year of the Rotaract Club of Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, year 2019-20, was under the presidency of Rtr. Sachith Munasinghe. The Installation ceremony was held on the 16th of August 2019. The vision was to do good for the society while helping our own members to develop themselves while broadening the relationships with the community. During the second year, twenty-three projects were completed, including one district project, which were directed to achieve our goals. The year started off with 80 members in the club and managed to grow to 118 during the year. The Rotaract Club of Faculty of Medicine was recognised for its valuable contributions and was awarded the District Citation for 2019-2020 as well as the Gold award for the cluster project. Rtr. Thanuja Kotawelagedra was given the presidency in the third year, year 2020-21, of the club.

In keeping  pace with the ever widening horizons of medical knowledge and possibilities, faculty is spearheading improvements to medical education.

The Faculty at present provides for the education and training of undergraduates in allied health sciences. The course in Pharmacology is a well-established one at the faculty while that for Physiotherapy is now 14 years old. In addition courses ranging from medico-legal sciences to those in medical education are regularly conducted. There is also a strong ethics review committee for processing of research projects and training of staff in ethical practices. These have provided for an innovative and vibrant academic environment within the faculty.

In the future the faculty is gearing itself for the rapid changes in the health and medical educational needs of the country. It has taken the steps towards using advanced technologies by forward thinking. In doing so it is our intention to establish and strengthen Inter departmental, inter faculty, inter – university and international links.

The Faculty has close links with several hospitals for teaching, training, clinical services and research. These include;
